On Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, American Transplant Foundation held a party at Que Bueno Mexican Grill in Westminster, Colorado to celebrate Team Transplant winning “Colorado Nonprofit Project of the Year” at the Gold Leaf awards, held annually by Colorado Healthcare Communicators.

At the event, attendees enjoyed great Mexican food and an extended happy hour; won prizes from Que Bueno; learned about American Transplant Foundation’s initiatives; and entered for chances to win over $1500 worth of raffle and silent auction prizes donated by event sponsors.

We decided that the best way to honor Team Transplant’s award is to directly assist transplant patients in need. In honor of all Team Transplant members, all funds raised at the event will go to the Patient Assistance Program.

Attendees included Team Transplant members, volunteers, transplant recipients, living organ donors, dialysis center workers, and other supporters.

An extra-special thanks goes to Steve Crider, who did an amazing job organizing the event!

Team Transplant wins Colorado Nonprofit Project of the Year award

American Transplant Foundation takes home high honors from the 2011 Colorado Healthcare Communicators Gold Leaf Awards ceremony

(DENVER, CO) – At the 2011 Gold Leaf Awards ceremony, hosted annually by Colorado Healthcare Communicators, American Transplant Foundation won big.  Their 2011 cycling team event – Team Transplant – was awarded “Colorado Nonprofit Project of the Year” and was also the only project to win a Gold Leaf in the “Community Relations: Ongoing” category.

Team Transplant won a Silver Leaf Award in 2010 and a Gold Leaf Award in 2009.

“Our Team Transplant supporters are such an incredible group of people.  It’s their passion and enthusiasm that make our cycling event possible, and on their behalf, we are so excited to accept this award,” said Anastasia Darwish, American Transplant Foundation’s Executive Director.  “We look forward to reaching even more people with our successful communications approach to advocate for organ and tissue donation with Team Transplant 2012.”

The sold-out awards event, held at Magnolia Hotel in Downtown Denver, was attended by representatives of major companies and organizations in the healthcare field from all across Colorado.  The other groups to win Gold Leafs were Porter Adventist Hospital, University of Colorado Hospital, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Children’s Hospital Colorado, The Colorado Health Foundation, and Delta Dental of Colorado.

The American Transplant Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that works to increase the donation of organs and tissue to reduce the growing list of men, women and children who are awaiting a lifesaving transplant.

David Landsberg of the Society for Organ Donor Awareness launched the national Donors Rock Ride in Texas on July 4, 2011, the anniversary of his kidney transplant. David is cycling 50 miles in 50 states in 50 days to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation! (The map of his journey is available here.) He will complete the Colorado portion of his ride on August 8th when he will ride in 10 mile loops to accommodate cyclists of all abilities. Read a message from David.

Eight transplant recipients and six living organ donors participated to prove it’s possible to lead a healthy, active lifestyle after transplant! Watch the video.

Among the recipients, six-year-old liver recipient Vienna Danna raced in the Shimano Youth Series and WON. Vienna was also one of the team’s top fundraisers, raising more than $1,700 for the American Transplant Foundation. The Lieutenant Governor of Colorado and Team Transplant member Joe Garcia spoke to the crowd about the importance of organ and tissue donation and presented Vienna with a Team Transplant Champion jersey for her accomplishment.

Team Transplant had riders participating in all the five courses, riding between seven and 100 miles. A sub team, the “Organ Grinders,” also represented Team Transplant in the 24 Hours of ERock mountain bike race June 3-4th. Thanks to sponsors and participants, this event raised more than $60,000 to support the American Transplant Foundation.
