Revolutionizing Transplants: How Robotic Surgery is Changing Lives

Robotic surgery is transforming organ transplantation, offering new hope for patients who might not have qualified for traditional surgery. With advanced technology, surgeons can operate with more precision, making transplants safer and recovery times shorter.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive technique where a surgeon controls robotic arms to perform precise surgical movements. Instead of standing over the patient, the surgeon operates from a console, using a 3D high-definition camera for better visualization.

Why Robotic Surgery?

A Life-Changing Procedure for High-BMI Patients

For patients with a high body mass index (BMI), kidney transplants were often out of reach due to surgical risks. Traditional surgery required large incisions, increasing the risk of complications like infections and poor healing. But robotic surgery is changing that.

Gerald Paity, a resident of Denver, Colorado, struggled for years to qualify for a kidney transplant due to his weight. Despite losing nearly 200 pounds, he was still unable to reach the required BMI for open surgery. After nine years on dialysis, he finally received a life-saving kidney transplant thanks to robotic surgery.

"I thought I was going to be on dialysis for the rest of my life," Gerald shared. "Now, I feel like myself again."

The Future of Robotic Transplants

While traditional surgery remains the best option for many, robotic surgery is expanding possibilities. Patients with high BMI and other challenges now have an alternative path to receiving life-saving transplants. As technology continues to evolve, more individuals will have access to safer, more efficient surgeries.

Robotic surgery is not only transforming the way transplants are performed, it's transforming lives.

Start 2025 Strong: Join Our 4-Week Liver Refresh Challenge!

This January, prioritize your well-being by going alcohol-free to give your liver a break and let it do what it does best: regenerate and repair. Each week, you’ll receive motivational guides, fun mocktail recipes, and tips to keep you on track.

If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol use, help is available.

Why Go Alcohol-Free?

Taking just one month off from alcohol can work wonders for your liver and overall health. Here’s how:
  • Boosts Liver Function: Going alcohol-free lets your liver focus on detoxifying the body, improving its function and efficiency.
  • Reduces Liver Fat: In as little as four weeks, liver fat can decrease, reducing strain and increasing energy levels.
  • Supports Regeneration: The liver is unique in its ability to regenerate. Alcohol-free time creates the best conditions for healing—even in cases of prior liver damage.
  • Improves Sleep and Energy: Many people notice better sleep, mental clarity, and boosted energy levels after going alcohol-free for a month.

The State of Liver Health

Liver disease is a growing concern, with over 9,350 people currently on the liver transplant waiting list. In 2022, 46% of deaths from liver disease involved alcohol. Lifestyle changes, like reducing alcohol consumption, can make a difference in preventing severe liver complications. By raising awareness, we can support liver health and reduce the need for transplants in the future.

What’s Included in the Challenge?

The Liver Refresh Challenge isn’t just about avoiding alcohol—it’s a holistic approach to liver health. Here’s what you’ll receive each week:
  • Hydration Tips: Staying hydrated helps your liver flush out toxins effectively.
  • Nutrient-Rich Recipes: Simple, liver-friendly recipes that are high in fiber and antioxidants.
  • Exercise Tips: Regular movement supports liver health and increases energy levels.

Want to Learn More?

Sign up below as we prepare to get started on January 1st. Plus, you can share your progress and inspire others with #LiverRefresh. Kick off the new year with a month dedicated to liver health. Your body—and your liver—will thank you!

Meet Jay: A Double Organ Donor, Ultramarathon Runner, and Life Saver

The incredible Jay during his 31-mile ultramarathon!

At the American Transplant Foundation, we have incredible volunteers who go above and beyond to support our mission, such as Jay. Not only is he a living donor of both a kidney and a portion of his liver, but he’s also recently completed his third ultramarathon, all while raising awareness and funds for our Patient Assistance Program.

A Lifelong Commitment to Saving Lives

Jay’s journey began in 2010, when he learned about the urgent need for living organ donors. While he didn’t have a family member in need, he discovered that non-directed donations are possible, meaning his kidney could go to the best-matched patient. His first act of generosity sparked a donation chain, enabling six additional kidney transplants!

Nine years later, Jay became a rare double donor, giving 60% of his liver during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This monumental act made him part of a select group who have donated both a kidney and part of their liver.

From Donation to Ultramarathons

Despite undergoing two major surgeries, Jay didn’t just return to his active life - he kicked it into high gear. In his 40s, after his first donation, Jay took up jogging and trail running. Fast-forward to September 2024, and Jay completed his 14th running event, the Red Feather Trail 50K, marking his third ultramarathon since becoming a double donor.

Fundraising for the Patient Assistance Program

Jay’s latest challenge wasn’t just a personal triumph; it was also a testament to his passion for supporting other transplant patients and donors. Through his ultramarathon fundraiser, Jay exceeded his fundraising goal, helping to provide direct financial assistance to transplant recipients and living donors in need.

In his words, "I couldn’t have done it without you. I appreciate each and every one of you!"  He not only ran to test his limits but also ran to save lives.

Taken by Jay as he crossed mile 27, with fall colors and even a few cows in sight,

How You Can Get Involved

Inspired by Jay’s story? There are many ways to support our work:
  • Donate: Every contribution helps us provide essential financial support to transplant recipients and living donors.
  • Consider Living Donation: While it’s a big ask, Jay’s story shows that it’s possible to live a healthy, active life after donation—even after two!
  • Spread the Word: Share Jay’s journey and encourage others to learn more about organ donation.

Jay’s dedication, both on the trails and through his donations, is an inspiration to us all. We are immensely proud to have him as part of the American Transplant Foundation family, and we look forward to many more miles—and lives saved—thanks to his tireless efforts.

Thank you, Jay, for all you’ve done, and congratulations on surpassing your goal!
